• Standing Committees

Our Alameda PTA maintains the following Standing Committees to oversee the programs identified below.

    Community Outreach

    • Clothing Center Since 1964, the Portland Council PTA Clothing Center has been assisting PPS èßäÊÓƵ in need, handing out bags of gently used and in some cases new clothes.

    • Landscape Our landscape team coordinates volunteers to help keep our School looking beautiful.

    • Bike/Walk to School This program is designed to promote health and wellbeing by encouraging èßäÊÓƵ to walk, bike, skate, or scooter to èßäÊÓƵ.

    • Green Team The Alameda Green Team strives to reduce our èßäÊÓƵ's environmental footprint by educating èßäÊÓƵ, parents, staff, and other community members on the best ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Learn more >

    • Discovery Garden The Garden Committee works in conjunction with classroom teachers to support classroom curriculum and provide èßäÊÓƵ a hands-on laboratory for learning about gardens and the environment.

    • Kids Care Club The Community Service Club is a parent-led afterèßäÊÓƵ program designed to engage èßäÊÓƵ in service projects and fundraising benefitting the greater community.

    Curriculum Support

    • Battle of the Books Battle of the Books is friendly reading competition for èßäÊÓƵ in grades 3rd-5th. Teams made up of four èßäÊÓƵ read 16 assigned books (generally four books per child) and then “battle” over comprehension questions. Students may form their own four-person team or can be matched up with a team by coordinators. Alameda’s Battle of the Books is part of a national reading incentive program. The winning team from Alameda advances to a regional competition.

    • Science Team The mission of the Science Team is to promote excitement for science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) for Alameda èßäÊÓƵ and their families through hands-on activities cultivated from the diverse background and experience of our community.

    • Chess Club Students meet weekly before èßäÊÓƵ for chess instruction and some friendly competition. Students have the opportunity to compete in tournaments as well. All ages and skill levels welcome. Alameda 5th grade teacher Mr. Sisk and parent volunteers oversee weekly meetings.

    • Reading Friends This program is based on the SMART reading program. A parent volunteer coordinator matches parent and community volunteers with teacher-nominated kindergarten through 3rd grade èßäÊÓƵ needing extra one-on-one contact to improve reading skills. Volunteers meet with the children for half an hour once per week during èßäÊÓƵ hours. Most children are assigned two Reading Friends, and most volunteers are assigned two èßäÊÓƵ.

    • Author’s Tea This monthly celebration tea provides èßäÊÓƵ an opportunity to read a writing sample aloud to their families. Teachers select a different student each month. All Alameda èßäÊÓƵ will participate once while attending Alameda School. Family members receive personal invitations to the library to listen and enjoy. Volunteers help with setup.
