Summer Acceleration Academy (SAA) is a supplemental academic program designed to support èßäÊÓƵ with literacy needs. It offers targeted instruction focused on foundational literacy skills, along with engaging enrichment activities. The program aims to prepare èßäÊÓƵ for the upcoming èßäÊÓƵ year by addressing unfinished learning and fostering confidence and a sense of belonging. SAA invites èßäÊÓƵ currently enrolled in Kindergarten through Second Grade at whose Winter literacy assessments indicate a need for additional support. The program prioritizes èßäÊÓƵ who will benefit most from intensive literacy interventions, helping them successfully transition to the next èßäÊÓƵ year.

All èßäÊÓƵ who met the criteria for SAA in grades K-2 at were extended an invitation to attend. Invitations are based on Winter literacy assessment data, which identified those needing additional support to meet grade-level expectations. SAA is designed to offer tailored instruction that addresses unfinished learning, helping èßäÊÓƵ build confidence and skills for the new èßäÊÓƵ year.

Enrollment is by invitation only, and will begin on March 10, 2025 for priority èßäÊÓƵ. The second round of enrollment will open on April 1, 2025.

Please contact your èßäÊÓƵ office. School office staff have access to their èßäÊÓƵ’s list of èßäÊÓƵ who were invited and can tell you if your student is enrolled in the program, and if not, they can help you enroll if needed.

Due to reduced funding and resources in 2025 compared to previous summers, SAA is focusing on a smaller number of èßäÊÓƵs with the highest need. By prioritizing , we aim to maximize the impact of available resources and address literacy gaps for èßäÊÓƵ most in need.

The shift to serving Kindergarten through Second Grade èßäÊÓƵ allows SAA to concentrate on foundational literacy skills, which are critical during these early years. This focus ensures that èßäÊÓƵ at a pivotal stage in their academic development receive the intensive support they need to succeed. Additionally, the Early Literacy Success Grant, which provides key funding for SAA, prioritizes initiatives aimed at building early literacy skills. This funding focus supports the decision to target resources toward younger èßäÊÓƵ in need of foundational skill development.

At this time, we cannot offer a waitlist for èßäÊÓƵ from non-participating èßäÊÓƵs. The program’s reduced size means we must prioritize èßäÊÓƵ from identified èßäÊÓƵs who meet the criteria.

Families may request a hub site change by contacting their èßäÊÓƵ office. Requests will be reviewed based on site availability, and decisions will be communicated promptly. Please note that transportation may be impacted if the new site is outside your neighborhood feeder pattern.

Students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade Spanish DLI classrooms will be able to attend SAA and receive instruction in Spanish at the following hub sites: Harriet Tubman, Harrison Park, Rosa Parks. The Spanish DLI curriculum for SAA focuses on foundational skills for Spanish Language Arts for these early grades.

Students are invited based on their Winter MAP Fluency assessment results. The criteria focus on foundational literacy skills such as phonics, word recognition, and sentence reading fluency. These assessments ensure that the program supports èßäÊÓƵ with the greatest need for literacy intervention.

• Kindergarten èßäÊÓƵ were invited to participate if their Winter MAP Fluency assessment results showed their level as “Below Expectations” or “Approaching Expectations” in any area of foundational skills (language comprehension, listening comprehension, phonics and word recognition, phonological awareness).

• First and Second Grade èßäÊÓƵ were invited to participate if their Winter MAP Fluency assessment results showed their level as “Below Expectations” or “Approaching Expectations” in any area of foundational skills (language comprehension, listening comprehension, phonics and word recognition, phonological awareness); or “Below Expectations” or “Approaching Expectations” in Sentence Reading Fluency.

If you have questions about your student’s MAP Fluency Assessment results, please contact your student’s teacher to learn more. These established criteria for participation were developed in collaboration with the Office of Student Support Services and Special Education Services and are aligned with the resources and staffing available to support this supplemental program during the summer months.

If your student attends one of the and you believe your student qualifies for SAA or if their literacy needs have changed since the Winter assessment, please collaborate with their teacher and èßäÊÓƵ team to review updated assessment data. If eligibility criteria are met, the èßäÊÓƵ can submit the data for review, and we will communicate a decision as soon as possible.

There is no cost to attend SAA or the supplemental afternoon enrichment activities.

We understand that summer is a time for family fun. In order to enroll in SAA, you must commit to your student attending at least 75% of the program and will be asked to sign an agreement to attend upon enrollment. We would like to ensure that you understand that we have a limited number of spaces and that your student will benefit the most from SAA by maximizing their attendance.
